High-Performance Solutions for Public Lighting in Panama City
Success Story: Public Lighting Project in Casco Histórico and Colón, Panama City
In 2013-2014, Ensa Panama, a subsidiary of EPM, presented us with a significant challenge: to design and install PRFV poles for public lighting in iconic areas of Panama City, including Casco Histórico and Colón—high-traffic areas with significant tourist recognition. The primary requirement was to provide solutions ensuring safety, aesthetics, and durability in demanding urban environments.
The project required Fiberglass Reinforced Polyester (FRP) poles that not only met public lighting standards but also offered mechanical stability, chemical resistance, anti-corrosive properties, and a visual design that harmonized with the colonial architecture and buildings in the area.
Implemented Solutions
1. Custom Design and Innovative Material
- The poles were manufactured using Fiberglass Reinforced Polyester (FRP), a lightweight, durable material highly adaptable to extreme environmental conditions.
- A white finish was used on the poles installed in Casco Histórico to blend with the light-colored buildings and preserve the area’s heritage aesthetics.
2. Dimensions and Specifications
- Length of 9 meters (30 ft) with an operational load capacity of 140 kgf (308 lbf).
- Installation on a metal base with a total weight (pole + base) of 100 kg (220 lb).
3. Compliance with American Standards (AASHTO)
- High structural resilience: Optimized design to absorb impacts, minimizing the severity of potential accidents and protecting both drivers and pedestrians.
- Reduction of material damage: In the event of a collision, the structures help mitigate vehicle damage and prevent severe consequences.
- Enhanced safety: Establishes specific criteria to ensure efficient lighting and stable, durable support structures under any environmental conditions.
Benefits of Fiberglass Reinforced Polyester in Public Lighting Poles
1. Enhanced Resilience and Safety
2. Chemical and Mechanical Resistance
Designed to withstand corrosion caused by coastal and rainy conditions, which are common in Colón and Casco Histórico.
3. Lightweight Construction
4. Custom Aesthetics
5. Low Maintenance
Fiberglass Reinforced Polyester poles require less maintenance compared to steel, concrete, and wood poles, reducing long-term costs.
Project Particularities
During the implementation, we prioritized:
- Installation in high-traffic areas: The selected zones required high-performance solutions to ensure driver and pedestrian safety.
- Structural resilience standards: Specific criteria were implemented according to AASHTO regulations to guarantee maximum protection in dense traffic areas.
- Continuous monitoring: The project was executed in different phases, with ongoing supervision by our technical team to ensure flawless installation that met the client’s high safety standards.
